Now that everyone is an expert at cuffing their jeans with their booties and pairing the correct necklace with the correct neckline (and, you are all looking fabulous by the way!), I will continue with the most common questions I get as a Personal Stylist..."I think it would be fun to mix patterns, but I am not sure how to do it. I don't want to look silly!" This is a good one.
Mixing patterned clothing is one of the best ways to upgrade your normal look, and have a little fun with your wardrobe. It doesn't have to be intimidating, and in fact can be easy to pull off. Here are a few of my tips and ideas to effortlessly mix and match patterns and look like the expert fashionista!
Want to start simple? Just add a contrasting pattern accessory.
This is usually done with a scarf, handbag or shoes.
This is one of my favorite patterns and it will continue to be so on-trend moving into spring/summer 2018. It is such an easy pattern to wear and it's also a pattern that most people already have in their closet. I consider stripes a neutral and mix it with all other prints...plaids, dots, florals, paisleys, and animal prints.
Same Color Family.
Another way to mix patterns is to mix patterns that share the same color scheme or mix a pattern that shares at least one color with the other pattern. For example, in the picture below, the blouse and skirt both share the color peach.
Vary The Scale of The Patterns...a more advanced, bold way of mixing patterns.
Large florals with small florals, large argyles with small checks, large checks with small checks...you get the idea. If you feel like your pattern choices may be a little busy, ground them with solids...add a solid jacket, vest, belt, scarf or tights.
Are you ready to kick your outfits up a notch? Either in a subtle way or a more bold way?
Mixing patterns is meant to be fun! It is an easy way to turn your look into a modern, fashion forward one.
As a Personal Stylist, I work with my client's current wardrobe, suggest new clothing, accessories and shoes to add to their wardrobe and then work my magic! I create new outfits - even mixing patterns - if she is game!
I also create personalized Pinterest Style boards - this is an easy way to refresh your wardrobe with new clothes, accessories and/or shoes. This service is a great place to start with a Personal Stylist and it can all be done through email!
I would love to work with you.
As a Personal Stylist, I love helping my clients work with the clothes and accessories already in their closet...occasionally we add a few new, on trend pieces to update or complement existing outfits. A common question I get when working with clients is "what necklace do I wear with this neckline?" Consider this question and more officially answered... just in time for the New Year and a new, stylish you!
The perfect accessories "finish" an outfit and help you look put together in an easy, effortless way.
I love to style v-necks with either a long pendant necklace or layered necklaces. For a more simple, classic look, wear one dainty necklace - just make sure it hits right at your decolletage.
My favorite way to style a turtleneck is without a necklace - I like to pair it with a pretty earring instead - a statement earring or a simple, feminine earring. Or, throw a fun coat on as an accessory. An exception - I do love a long pendant necklace with a turtleneck poncho.
Thin, short chain necklaces do not work well with crewnecks; they can get caught on the edge of the fabric and hide inside. Instead, go bold! Bib or collar necklaces work best with a crewneck - they add the perfect finishing touch!
This neckline works well with short, delicate chain necklaces or, in a nod to classic elegance, real or faux pearl chokers. For a unique look, wear a statement necklace under the collar of a buttoned up shirt-you can even layer this under a crew neck sweater. I also love the look of a collared shirt with a great pair of statement earrings.
My own preference with this sharp, straight-across neckline is no necklace at all. Picture elegant Audrey Hepburn in her black bateau cocktail dress in "Sabrina". But, if you want to accent a boat neck top with a necklace, go long. Or, opt for no necklace and pair with pretty earrings. For an edgy look, throw a leather jacket on with your boat neck-so cool!
Offset the imbalance of a one-shoulder top with long strands that draw the eye center and down. For a different look, wear a hoop or statement earrings and a bold cuff on the wrist opposite the covered shoulder.
Off The Shoulder
So many accessory options! I love to pair a choker with an off the shoulder - chokers complement, but do not compete with this pretty bare shoulder look. Other stylish looks...add a long pendant necklace, statement earrings (with no necklace) or a pretty, trendy neck scarf...oh la la!
This neckline is already detailed and has volume, so no necklace is best. Add a pair of pretty earrings instead!
A New Year, a New You!
Are you frustrated with your wardrobe? Do you look in your closet, see clothes, shoes and accessories, but feel like you have nothing to wear or feel overwhelmed? As a Personal Stylist, I get into your closet with you-we decide what to keep, alter or donate and I put together new outfits with the pieces you already have in your wardrobe. I will photograph your new outfits so that you can reference them later. I will then create a prioritized shopping list of new clothes and accessories to help maximize your current wardrobe. You can purchase these pieces on your own and over time as you wish, or I can take the shopping list and do the shopping for you - you decide!
Love your wardrobe, but need a few new, seasonal pieces? Do you have a special event or trip coming up? I would love to help.
Cheers to the New Year!
Ankle boots and jeans are such a trendy combo this season—but they are also notoriously tricky to pair together.
There are so many awesome jeans this season-of course there is the tried and true skinny, but I also love cropped hems and boyfriends with a great pair of ankle boots. If you tend to reach for your skinny jeans every time you’re in the mood to wear ankle boots, it’s time to change things up and add some variety.
Here are some handy tips to make sure you know exactly how to wear booties with jeans.
For a trendy, current look, cuff your jean above the ankle and show a hint of skin - this will help visually elongate your leg. Don't tuck your jeans into your boots - this creates a stumpy look because there is no break in the line of the leg at the ankle.
The Big Cuff-turn your jeans up 3- 4 inches. This is a great look for a longer leg.
The Double Cuff - simply fold the hem of your jeans about one inch, and then fold a second time to get the desired length. This is the perfect look for a shorter leg. A little tip: it’s often easier to cuff your jeans before putting them on, and then just adjust afterwards as needed.
Cropped jeans are a cinch to style with ankle boots because you don't have to do anything-as long as the hemline falls above or right at the top of your boot. This is definitely a more fashion forward look and these jeans are especially on trend if they have a frayed or flared bottom or both!
Roll the hem a few times to create a messy cuff - boyfriend jeans are great with a flat or heeled ankle boot - try a colored or patterned boot for a fun, edgy look!
I love what I do as a Personal Stylist - helping clients create new looks with the pieces they already have in their wardrobe, styling a client for a special event and seeing the joy and confidence in a client when they try a completely new look and love it!
If you need suggestions on new jeans, booties, seasonal pieces, holiday party attire, weddings or an entire Wardrobe Edit I would love to work with you!
